“It’s really nice to see that power dynamic change,” he continues.
“She’s got the power now.
He’s asking her, ‘yo marry me.
Let’s spend our life together.
I haven’t stopped thinking about you for months.’
“Itisa show of happily-ever-afters,” she says.
Largely, that’s because of a major change from the novel.
InRomancing Mister Bridgerton,Colin is fully aware of Penelope’s secret identity as Lady Whistledown when he proposes.
But on the show, Colin remains blissfully ignorant of his potential new bride’s alter ego.
It felt important to give that a moment to shine without making her secret identity overshadow the storyline.
But there is more to come with that secret in the back half.”
Newton also teases that the secret will create potentially disastrous consequences for Colin and Penelope.
“That’s the key to keeping the rest of the season complicated,” he hints.
“At this point, confessions could be made and they could say, ‘Great.
We live happily ever after.’
But there’s this underlying secret.”
Additionally, Colin has a lot more at stake in regards to Whistledown on the series.
But he feels betrayed by that and like she was ruined by that.
He’s probably the most angry out of anyone, holding onto that grudge against Whistledown."
