A grand jury subsequently indicted him on16 felony chargesfor falsifying police reports and lying to investigators.
He was alsowritten off ofEmpireby creator Lee Daniels and did not take part in the show’s final season.

This decision was not particularly popular.
In 2020, a special prosecutor was appointed to redo the case.
But Smollett never served that sentence.
