After everything they’ve been through, he’s come to think of her like a daughter.
That’s why he couldn’t stand idly by as Ellie died at the hands of the Firefly doctors.

Marlene is waiting for him in the parking garage.
“you could’t keep her safe forever,” she says.
Joel is unmoved and kills Marlene.

But Ellie is withdrawn.
She has him swear that he’s not lying to her about what happened at the hospital.
He’s even begun seeing a therapist, Gail (Catherine O’Hara).

He also makes it clear that Joel will have to do the same if he wants to stay.
He’s also the father to a young child.
She’s also pregnant with Tommy’s child.

Later, we learn that she previously had a son, Kevin, who died.
She even forbade Tommy from communicating with Joel.
She hints at her distrust when speaking with Ellie.

One major change between the game and the series concerns Abby’s physique.
As played by the game’s Laura Bailey, Abby is imposing and very muscular.
