Jon Watts and Christopher Ford explain how they pulled off that familiar scene in the premiere.

The latestStar Warsseries, titledSkeleton Crew, bills itself as a throwback to the Amblin adventure movies of yesteryear.

In fact, the first scene mirrored the first-everStar Warsscene.
And it was also extremely deliberate.
That ones definite, premiere director and series cocreator Jon Watts tellsEntertainment Weeklyof the tribute.

So what made them want to reference that classicStar Warsshot?
And they’re not just Stormtroopers who are organized attacking with machetes.
It’s just a little bit more insane.

But not just any hologram show.
I’ve just always been fascinated by that weird little circus hologram.
And if anyone was wondering: No, that is not the originalStar Wars Holiday Specialfootage.

We recreated it, Watts confirms.
It was limiting because we would have to have used the same angle, adds Ford.
We needed to shoot it from multiple angles.
The new scene didnt just have to look right, it had tosoundright.
In the end, Watts and Ford definitely did a job that would have made Lumpy proud.
But it makes me really happy, and it makes me wonder what that circus troop is up to.
