Saldana followed in Nichols footsteps when she took over the role in J.J. Abrams' reboot movie in 2009.

Nichols died on Sundayat age 89.
Her son Kyle Johnson confirmed the news onher official Instagram account.
“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away.
